ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

The craftsman and designer, Seth Carlson, finds inspiration from the animals and insects that he has encountered throughout his life. Seth’s artistic aspirations started in rural Minnesota

where he was born, worked on farms, and explored the outdoors. Seth’s jewelry and sculpture career began at an early age in his Father’s stained glass studio where he fashioned jewelry and art pieces from scraps of discarded glass. After transitioning to metallic mediums, Seth knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life as a jeweler, and earned a b.f.a. in metals and jewelry from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Seth continued to work for other jewelers and established Seth Michael Studio in 2010 as a way to share the beauty of the natural world, and preserve the memories of the wildlife he encountered.

Seth creates all of his pieces by hand. His favorite techniques include chasing and repousse, fold- forming, and fabrication. Ethically sourced, and top quality materials are a priority for Seth, and he became a licensed Fairmined gold brand in 2022. In addition, Seth only uses ethically sourced diamonds and gemstones that he is able to trace to the source. Seth Michael Studio has gained an identity through the sculptural renderings of wildlife that Seth fabricates with 18k gold, and silver. Bringing a piece to life and integrating its wearability in a seamless manner is one of Seth’s true passions. While many of Seth’s pieces celebrate wildlife through texture, color, and pattern, he does not use any animal parts in the creation of his jewelry. Regardless of his location

Seth is a Minnesotan at heart and continues to be inspired by the wildlife, people and experiences of his surroundings.

ABOUT THE WORK

Fabrication - All of Seth’s work is hand made. Seth uses traditional goldsmithing and silversmithing fabrication techniques. Each piece is lovingly hand crafted through a layered process of sawing, filing, forming, scoring, bending, soldering, polishing, chasing, raising, linking… Please keep in mind that each piece is an individual work of art, and there may be small variations in measurements.

Metals - Seth uses only ethically sourced metals from a reputable refiner in the United States (see the link on Harmony metals at the bottom of page.) The metal is recycled and/ or ethically sourced and fair trade certified. Seth uses an alloy of silver called Trusilver from Hoover and Strong Refiners that resists tarnish/ oxidation. Additionally Seth uses fine silver for making chain, and a special 18k ‘Royal’ gold alloy also from Hoover and Strong.

Patina - Seth receives many inquiries regarding the patina on silver. The array of colors is achieved through a chemical process using potassium sulphate (a compound often found in foods such as eggs), a special surface texture and controlled heat. While many colors are achieved in the process there are no standardized outcomes and color composition will vary.

Gemstones - Seth sources his gemstones from reputable vendors that are knowledgeable about the origins of their stones. He takes every measure to ensure that rigorous environmental and human rights standards are enforced in every step of harvesting.
